Master of Engineering

The Master of Engineering (MEng) program builds upon the undergraduate engineering degree as a ‘capstone’ sequence composed of advanced engineering discipline courses and applied management and leadership courses.  The MEng degree is a coursework-only professional program with a substantive management component for engineers employed in or preparing to enter technical management roles in business and industry. In some cases the degree may be completed completely online; please consult your emphasis area contact to learn which technical courses may be available online.

Emphasis Areas

Five technical emphasis areas are offered, including Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Engineering and Science, and Safety Management. Students must apply to one of these emphasis areas and will be advised by a program coordinator in that department.

Degree Options

This is a non-thesis master’s degree that includes only coursework.  A research or technical project is optional. Most of the management courses are available online. Some of the technical courses may be available online.

Accelerated MS option

The Accelerated MS option is open to students earning a BS from South Dakota Mines. Students admitted to the Accelerated MS may apply up to 9 credits of approved 400/500/600 level coursework toward both the BS and the MS degrees. 

Outcomes

Graduates of the Master of Engineering program can:

  • understand and apply technical principles at level suitable for professional practice,
  • articulate and apply sound management techniques to projects and teams,
  • communicate effectively.

Financial support

The Master of Engineering is a coursework-based program and students are typically self-funded.

Background requirements

A bachelor’s level degree, in an area related to the emphasis area in which the applicant wishes to enroll, is required. 

Admission requirements

A GPA of 3.0 or higher is generally required for admission.  Applicants with a GPA of less than 3.0 will be considered, particularly those possessing substantial work experience.

GRE scores and letters of recommendation are not required for admission.

Transfer credits

Policies for transferring credits from outside institutions can be found in the requirements and policies applied to all graduate degrees  by the Council of Graduate Education. All transfers are subject to approval by the student’s advisor.
