Master of Engineering, M.Eng.

The Master of Engineering program at SDSM&T is a course-based professional master’s degree program.   The Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) program builds upon the undergraduate engineering degree as a ‘capstone’ sequence composed of advanced engineering discipline courses and applied management and leadership courses.  The M. Eng. degree is a coursework-only professional program with a substantive management component for engineers employed in or preparing to enter technical management roles in business and industry.

Admission Requirements

A bachelor’s-level degree in an area related to the emphasis area you wish to enroll in is required.  A GPA of 3.0 or higher is generally required for admission.  Applicants with a GPA of less than 3.0 will be considered, particularly those possessing substantial work experience.

Degree requirements:  The program requires 30 credits for graduation, of which15-24 credits of engineering content must be selected from one of three available technical emphasis areas in either Civil & Environmental Engineering (CEE), Electrical Engineering (EE), and Materials Engineering & Science (MES).  The remaining 6-15 credits must be management courses that complement the student’s professional goals. All courses must be approved in advance by the program coordinator of the student’s emphasis area.   

A thesis or final examination is not required.  A project report is optional.

CEE Emphasis Credit Requirements

  • At least 15 credit hours of CEE approved graduate coursework (500 level courses and above)
  • No more than 3 credits may be from CEE 691, CEE 788, CEM 788, CEE 791,  or CP 697
  • The following courses may not be applied to the M. Eng. degree: CEE 790 and CEE 798.
  • At least 15 credit hours used toward degree requirements (technical and management courses combined) must be at the 600 level or higher.

Courses are available in any of our three online M.S. professional programs of [MHP1] Engineering Management, Construction Engineering and Management, and Mining Engineering and Management. Students select a minimum of two of the courses listed below to meet the management course requirement.
